Moreover, marijuana has pejorative associations, a term that carries a devastating legacy of public misperception, racial discrimination, and injustice to poor folks all over the world.
In the early half of the 20th century, marijuana came to be used as the name for the plant that immigrants from Mexico introduced into Texas border towns where it was smoked and sold. It is well documented that the name played off of racial prejudice and anti-immigrant fears in the US, and was adopted in order to create a highly sensationalized image of a narcotic capable of turning people insane and violent.
This also caused countries all over the world to adopt that same stance against cannabis. Why not when they stand to loose all of their US funding, grants and business proposals. Jamaica fell under the hammer of corporate greed. Why? because big companies in the US could not patent the marijuana remedy because it was directly from nature. Almost overnight, a plant that brought so much good and healing to poor folks became outlawed as a schedule 1 drug. Then law abiding Jamaicans began buying more big pharma drugs that cause more harm than good.
The plan worked. But now its time to take a good look at how we were all deceived. Look at what is happening in the US now...Cannabis has re-surged as the miracle cure...that it always was.
Up until the 20th century, the cannabis plant had enjoyed an honorable reputation as a potent medicinal herb throughout a long history that spanned thousands of years and numerous cultures. The therapeutic value of cannabis was already well established in 19th century medical literature and pharmaceutical companies like Bristol-Myers Squib and Eli Lilly sold it in remedies to treat a variety of ailments. The bottles in the picture above shows clearly that those well respected companies had no problems labeling cannabis as their product.
Our hope is that society and governments will return to a more accurate perspective on this remarkable plant and give it a legitimate place in the spectrum of medical treatments options. Why not, when its a miracle herbal medicine.
